ACRYLIC ON MASONITE "BIG BOOM AT DONG TAM" 48" X 96"

When I manage to become disconnected from my daily routine, I draw. Always searching for the new and undiscovered brings forth a sustained gratification. I believe the creative process is in full form when in search of discovery.

My work begins with the use of intuitive line drawings, which are created as a daily ritual. They are stored for years and readily available as a reference. My recent paintings have emerged from groupings and manipulations of these drawings. Thus, bringing together related thoughts, movements, and expressions that can evolve over a period of many years. It is only then that scale and material become a factor. I create several series of works with different mediums, simultaneously, and they ranged from twelve by twelve feet to three by three inches.

Color theory has been an equally important study through the years. Early on I approached color analytically, and then with great hesitation, I began to mix paint with vision rather than conscious thought. Warm and cool and light and dark became my Mantra. The result was a door opening to continuous discovery of color interaction. I am always looking for opportunities to create powerful and colorful relationships. I hope to convey the essence of my work to the viewer through the juxtaposition of color, light, shadow, cultural commentary, simplicity of form and shape, and maybe I will elicit a question or two.
